TONY BIESIEK

"Certified Passive House Designer"

I am thrilled to announce that I recently qualified as a Certified Passive House Designer!

This internationally recognised certification represents my dedication to sustainable architecture and energy-efficient design. As a Certified Passive House Designer, I bring expertise in creating buildings that are not only environmentally friendly but also incredibly comfortable and cost-effective for clients.

With this new certification, I am more committed than ever to pioneering innovative, green solutions in the architectural world. Passive House designs significantly reduce energy consumption, ensuring that our projects contribute positively to the environment while providing superior living and working spaces.

Join me in celebrating this remarkable achievement! My passion and expertise will undoubtedly elevate our projects to new heights of sustainability and excellence.

So, what is Passive House?

Passive House is a rigorous, voluntary standard for energy efficiency in a building, which reduces its ecological footprint. It results in ultra-low energy buildings that require little energy for space heating or cooling. Key principles include:

- High-quality insulation: To keep the building warm in winter and cool in summer.

- Advanced window technology: Often triple-paned windows that enhance thermal comfort.

- Airtight construction: To minimise drafts and heat loss.

- Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery: Ensures fresh air supply while retaining indoor warmth.

- Minimised thermal bridging: Prevents heat loss through structural elements.

These 5 key elements are tested and validated throughout the design, documentation and construction phases of the building process.

Passive House designs lead to buildings that are incredibly energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective to operate.

Despite having "house" in the title Passive House the standard can be applied to many building types, in fact offices, museums, schools, whole suburbs and apartment complexes have been built to the Passive House standard.

So what do these Passive House design principles look like in real life?

The image below shows the performance of an Imagine house design where energy efficiency, sustainability and air quality are given high priority in the design brief. needless to say the client is ecstatic with the results...a home that heats itself!

The facts:

< 10 deg C overnight (winter)

21 deg target temperature

20.7 deg actual temperature at 7:32am

No additional heating used. Ie: just the house and it's occupants

How did we achieve this:

Fully insulated concrete floor, edge and underside.

Wall & roof insulation at high levels.

Airtight building envelope design.

Tranzheat heat recovery ventilation system.

uPVC door & windows, Low-e, Argon filled glazing.

Reduced thermal bridging by design.

Correct orientation & design to the sun.

Similar results a few nights earlier with overnight temp at 6 deg.

This project was designed a few years ago so if the full weight of Passive House design was applied the results would be even better and sustainable at much, much lower overnight temperatures.
